The Mug Shot of Danny Boy

Just wanted to wish all my buddies out there a happy St. Patrick's Day, especially both Guiness and Guinness, recent story-writers. I am so happy because Bad Dog Chronicles is no longer for sale! Thanks to everyone for helping out in whatever way you can to support the website which I love so much. What do you think about "advertising" by posting banner greetings for Easter? Big thanks to Pawier too for their writing a check for the next four months. Mom says now I will be eating their vitamins. That's ok if it gives me energy to chase cats.

I know "Danny Boy" is a strange name for an English Cocker Spaniel, but my hair is red. And my mom thought maybe somehow naming me Irish would contribute to world peace. My Dad says I am really just the beginning of a new breed of dog: the Irish Cat Hound. Unfortunately, I cannot pass down my wonderful characteristics. Due to someone not truly appreciating my potential, I have been robbed of the ability to be the foundation sire of the new breed.

Out here in California, we have a columnist, Chris Erskine, in the Los Angeles Times newspaper and he wrote a great story last week about his Cocker Spaniel. When I wrote to congratulate him on such a great column, he wrote back and sent this thoughtful passage which he got from another reader. I will pass this along to all of you, because I think it perfectly illustrates what people can learn from us dogs. If anyone knows the name of the author, please let Doug Brown know so he can tell me.

THINGS WE CAN LEARN FROM A DOG...

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you wnat lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
